Cuban Women: Emancipation From A Patriarchal Society

Number of pages: 10

ABSTRACT:
10 pages in length. Women in a repressive, male chauvinistic society -- such as in Cuba -- must do what they have to in order to survive. Unfortunately their actions, such as prostitution, serve to reinforce the very image they seek to abandon. A high percentage of Cuban women are educated but hesitate to pursue a career in their respective fields because it does not pay off. Indeed, Communism offers very little incentive for women to work their way up in a patriarchal society. As a direct result, they are driven to do what ever is deemed necessary to live day to day. The writer discusses that Cuban women have chosen to prostitute or sell themselves not because they have low self-esteem, are unintelligent or incapable of getting by as a woman, but because the system has failed them; it provides no motivation or incentive to work. Bibliography lists 7 sources.
